Rachel Bigsby Appointed Judge for Bird Photographer of the Year 2025

Award-winning wildlife photographer Rachel Bigsby has been appointed to the judging panel for Bird Photographer of the Year 2025, one of the world's leading international bird photography competitions.

The invitation marks a significant milestone in Rachel's career, recognising her distinctive artistic approach, specialist knowledge of avian wildlife and growing influence within the international photography community. Rachel's relationship with Bird Photographer of the Year began as an entrant, receiving a Highly Commended distinction in 2022 before winning the coveted Portfolio Award in 2023. These achievements helped establish her reputation for fine-art wildlife photography, particularly her intimate and unconventional interpretations of seabirds and their marine environments.

Her appointment as a judge represents a meaningful progression from receiving international recognition to helping recognise the creative achievements of others.

Rachel photographs Sooty Terns on Lord Howe Island, captured by island photographer, Chelsea Scott.

Entirely self-taught, Rachel began developing her photographic skills as a teenager, independently building the field experience, technical understanding and artistic vision that would eventually establish her professional career. Having experienced firsthand the significance of photographic competitions in creating opportunities for emerging artists, she brings both professional expertise and a personal appreciation of the importance of such recognition.

As a member of the 2025 judging panel, Rachel will help evaluate submissions from photographers around the world, bringing a perspective shaped by more than a decade of field experience, a deep understanding of bird behaviour and a commitment to creative individuality. Her photographic philosophy places particular emphasis on originality, storytelling and the ability of an image to communicate something beyond its subject. Rather than viewing technical perfection as the sole measure of a successful photograph, Rachel believes in the importance of artistic expression, emotional connection and developing a distinctive photographic voice.

Reflecting on her appointment, Rachel said:

“I'm truly honoured to join the judging panel for Bird Photographer of the Year 2025. This competition holds a special place in my heart, as it was instrumental in my growth as a photographer. I know firsthand how much this platform means to aspiring photographers, and I'm excited to help celebrate and elevate the incredible talent that exists in the bird photography community.”

Beyond her own photographic achievements, Rachel is committed to making wildlife photography more accessible through mentoring, workshops and educational opportunities. Her unconventional journey into the industry continues to inform an encouraging approach to emerging photographers, particularly those developing their skills independently.
