Wildlife Photography Expedition to Svalbard in Winter

Co-led by Rachel Bigsby for Muench Workshops Immerse yourself in the ethereal beauty of the Arctic Winter, when Svalbard transforms into a photographer’s dreamscape, co-led by Rachel Bigsby in collaboration with Muench Workshops. This exclusive photography workshop offers a unique opportunity to explore the Arctic wilderness of Svalbard aboard the M/S Virgo, a private, ice-strengthened expedition ship. With only 12 participants and a high instructor-to-guest ratio, you’ll receive personal instruction and guidance to photograph ethereal golden light, icy terrain, polar bears, walruses, Arctic foxes, and other wildlife in their natural habitat while navigating dynamic sea ice that reflects the Arctic’s magical winter light.

Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival in Longyearbyen, Norway

  • Fly to Longyearbyen, the northernmost town in the world. Arrive before dinner.

  • Group dinner and overnight stay at a hotel in Longyearbyen. Staying overnight in Oslo the night before may simplify your travel schedule, and we can recommend a convenient airport hotel in Oslo.

Day 2: Embark on M/S Virgo

  • Board the M/S Virgo, a newly remodeled expedition ship designed for Arctic exploration.

  • Settle into your bright, comfortable cabin and enjoy a safety briefing.

  • Begin your Arctic adventure with zodiac outings and photography from the ship’s multiple deck areas, all tailored for imaging needs.

Days 3–9: Exploring Svalbard

  • Polar Bears: The primary focus of this expedition. Search for these majestic animals on drifting sea ice, with opportunities to photograph mothers with cubs, males sparring, or bears with kills. While sightings can’t be guaranteed, our experienced guides will optimize your chances.

  • Arctic Mammals and Birds: Encounter walruses, seals, Arctic foxes, reindeer, and winter-resilient bird species. Use zodiacs to get close to wildlife while navigating sea ice and fjords.

  • Spectacular Landscapes: Capture breathtaking Arctic scenery under the low winter sun, which casts long shadows and accentuates the textures of snow and ice.

  • Winter Light Photography: The interplay of light, ice, and color will provide endless inspiration for your portfolio.

  • Onboard Activities: Daily image reviews, post-processing sessions, and one-on-one coaching ensure you’ll leave with a refined craft and stunning photographs.

Day 10: Disembark and Departure

  • After breakfast, disembark the M/S Virgo.

  • Connect to your domestic flight to Oslo via Longyearbyen’s airport, with taxi rides provided to match your flight schedule.
