Wildlife Photography Expedition to South Georgia and the Falkland Islands

Co-led by Rachel Bigsby for Muench Workshops Embark on an unforgettable 18-day wildlife photography expedition to South Georgia and the Falkland Islands, co-led by Rachel Bigsby in collaboration with Muench Workshops on a luxurious, all-inclusive workshop limited to under 50 guests with five professional photographers and five expert naturalists. Designed for wildlife photographers, this journey offers unparalleled access to two of the planet’s most abundant and biodiverse regions.

Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival in Ushuaia, Argentina

  • Arrive in Ushuaia, the southernmost city in the world, and check in at the included hotel.

  • Attend a welcoming reception to meet your fellow participants and learn more about the expedition ahead.

Day 2: Setting Sail for the Falklands

  • Embark on the expedition vessel and begin your journey across the Southern Ocean.

  • Participate in safety briefings, photography workshops, and wildlife presentations.

  • Spend time on deck photographing seabirds, including albatrosses and petrels.

Day 3: At Sea

  • Enjoy an extensive lecture program covering wildlife behavior, photography techniques, and regional ecology.

  • Participate in image review sessions to refine your skills with personalised feedback.

Days 4–5: Falkland Islands

  • Explore the remote Falkland Islands, renowned for their abundant birdlife and marine mammals.

  • Highlights may include:

    • Port Stanley: Visit the capital’s museums, pubs, and historic sites, including the whalebone arch and shipwrecks.

    • Seabird Colonies: Photograph rockhopper penguins, albatrosses, and cormorants.

    • Marine Mammals: Spot Peale’s and Commerson’s dolphins in the surrounding waters.

Days 6–7: Crossing to South Georgia

  • Cross the Antarctic Convergence, the biological boundary of the Southern Ocean, where nutrient-rich waters attract diverse marine life.

  • Participate in bio-security procedures to ensure South Georgia’s pristine environment is preserved.

Days 8–14: South Georgia Explore the wildlife-rich and scenic landscapes of South Georgia. Destinations may include:

  • Salisbury Plain: Home to tens of thousands of king penguins, with dramatic glacial backdrops.

  • Prion Island: Observe wandering albatrosses displaying intricate courtship rituals from designated viewing platforms.

  • Grytviken: Visit the historic whaling station, South Georgia Museum, and the grave of Sir Ernest Shackleton.

  • St. Andrews Bay: Photograph the island’s largest king penguin colony, alongside fur seals, elephant seals, and leopard seals.

  • Godthul: Capture images of gentoo penguins and light-mantled sooty albatrosses nesting on rugged cliffs.

  • Cooper Bay and Drygalski Fjord: Spot chinstrap and macaroni penguins, explore glacial landscapes, and witness potential calving events.

Days 15–16: At Sea

  • Reflect on your South Georgia experiences as you sail back toward the Falkland Islands.

  • Enjoy lectures, image reviews, and post-processing workshops to prepare your photos for exhibition or publication.

Day 17: Falkland Islands (Second Visit)

  • Weather permitting, make additional landings in the Falklands to photograph seabirds and marine mammals.

  • Capture new perspectives on the archipelago’s windswept landscapes and unique wildlife.

Day 18: Farewell in Ushuaia

  • Disembark in Ushuaia and transfer to the airport or town center.

  • Say goodbye to your fellow adventurers and reflect on your incredible polar experience.
